Update and Flute pics....

Hi Guys,

First of all thank you very much for all support!! I am receiving many e-mails and comments in the blog from some great folks willing to somehow support the project.

As I mentioned before I printed a nice flute... and it works !!!!! I will post a video with my friend Tiago playing it soon... (unfortunately I can't play)

  1. Unbelievable... Could you give us a few more details of your machine, in particular:

    1) What resin are you using?
    2) If it's UV curable resin, how does your projector cause it to set? Or have you modified your projector in some way?

  10. Hi Junior.
    Another question I had was do we need to add our own 3d support structure to our 3d model and if so, are there certain guidelines to follow for proper support? I am a 3d artist so this is not a problem for me. I saw the photo of the rings and noticed they all had support structures and I'm guessing that attaching them with thin connections would make for easier removal.

I have questions about the projector and how you figured out the correct distance(from projector to resin) to make the objects actual size or of it can be compensated in software if we wanted a larger build area thus having to place the projector further away from the resin pool.   20. Hi Junior, Been doing lots of research and finding that material cost will be a big factor when considering this printer. I'm finding that the going price is about $4.50 cu. in. I have looked at the Envisiontec printers, which are similar in principal (upside down builds using DLP) but you can't touch their printers for less than 30 grand! I guess they have a technology that allows for different levels of grey scale to cure at different depths to create smoother surfaces (voxel thickness as apposed to flat layers) Actually, I would be perfectly happy with flat layers at this point, still way better than the resolution that's out there for printers at this price point. Back to researching......

  21. @Jon: Envisiontec uses flat layers too. They boost resolution in the XY plane by pixel splitting, a process where multiple slightly shifted projections are used to cure a layer.

  22. @KC: That makes more sense to me and even easier to do. They (Envisiontec)explained to me that different intensities (grey scale values)of certain "edge" pixels cure the resin at different depths, which seems like it would be very hard to control consistently. On the other hand.....By shifting the image/exposure slightly in the XY direction, lower resolution DLP's should be able to achieve a smoother finish, or.... If projecting a larger image (projector further from resin) This shifting would also improve smoothness. Larger projections would make for larger pixels. There are so many factors when optimizing the resolution of a print. For example, How many pixels of the 1024 x 768 image are you using for your object? I guess if you calibrate the 1024 x 768 image to a "real world" size in inches or cm, you would not need to re-position the projector. Then again, If you use as much image real estate as possible for each build, you would have to always re-calculate the focal length of the projector to produce a 1:1 part. Maybe create a calibration screen to project onto a matching transparency?? It kind of makes your head spin when thinking of all the factors involved and I'm sure Junior has taken all this into consideration. Maybe all these things can be automated somehow in software?? I don't know, I'm no engineer, Just excited to start the project.

  35. Dear Junior. I visit your blog for many months now, but still (no offense) see no concrete plans or a roadmap about your construction. It seems that you deliberately delay to disclose further info, possibly for any of the following reasons:

    1. You are expecting something that is not happenning... i.e. make money by getting "acquired" by a major 3D printer manufacturer (not possible for the reasons you and many of us are aware of...)

    2. You have being warned by some major 3D printer manufacturer about possible IP infrigments, dont know how to handle it (forget them, see how Geoh0t handled the iPhone jailbreak by the giant Apple)

    3. You are a perfectionist, seeking the best out of the first version (get over it...)

    4. You have a proof of concept but no stable working system, that does not produce any repeatable results, therefore your system offers no significant advantages over what the OS reprap flavors do (we are here to assist, just like in all OS groups), btw blogs are by default SHARING media... not press releases by commercial companies.

    In either case, I think you should have to disclose further info to your loyal fans and not let them in the dark any longer. Give us your BoM and let us experiment too, contributing to your idea. I would like to know some info on lamp wavelength, DLP types, resin material e.t.c.
    Me, as many other friends too, freeze our investment on other comparable DIY printers because of your expectations.

    As far for the possible IP infringement, we all know that there will be no case, since you will not commercialise your findings. Am I right?

  43. Till now, has anyone of us contributed anything to his effort? Junior has done his research and has spent his money and time on the machine, and his wish is to build an AFFORDABLE piece! Even though there are DIY machines on the market at a lower price range, just take a look at the final results and I am sure anyone like me knows which machine to choose. And I suspect people who are so ANGRY about his idea of patenting.

  44. NO ONE IN THESE COMMENTS UNDERSTANDS.

    You are all acting like a bunch of demanding 12 year olds. These things take time and money to create plans or design machines like the one he is building. How can any of you expect he just releases the plans for free?!
    Junior is working very hard to perfect the idea that he has helped create. Yes, it may be based off of other tech but that does NOT mean it is not new, innovative, and exciting.

    All the other open source 3d printers are sold to MAKE MONEY so that the companies can keep on producing the machines. I am happy Junior is working this way, and hope that HE CONTINUES to take as much time as he needs to make sure this project comes out exactly as he envisioned it. I, along with many other people have NO problem purchasing a kit from him so that he can get a little extra something out of all the time he has put into this.

    Either way, Junior you are doing a tremendous job. Many people still follow this blog even though they do not comment. These people will gladly back you up when you create a kickstarter, and look for funding to create these machines. Take your time and do it well, you will be a god among the DIY community no matter what.

  45. He has also posted before....the plans will be available through CROWD FUNDING. That means we all pay a little and it gets contributed to the open source community. He gets something for all his hard work, and we get what we want. Everyone just needs to WAIT.

  46. Panduh, It's not going to happen. You still dont get it. After his patent issue date, he will then decide what and when to publish some form of plans. This may take weeks or months as he said, which seems that you Panduh had no chance of reading it... Dont know if you have free time to spare, I dont.

    I agree with Mathias and the rest of you guys. We all somehow helped Jr to come this far, although it was and remains his project. We were just expecting for results not caring for his off-topic tweets.

    BTW, lets all share our findings about possible resin sources/recipes. As for the hardware/software I can provide you, similar to Jr's plans very soon. Looking forward to some action.

  48. i have been checking this page everday and it seems i have mised something this week-end...
    I have no probleme wih JR making some money out if this. He has invested a lot of time and money. I have have to admit that the wait is frustrating, but i cant see how i could complaine. Ok this is not 100% open source, so what!

He will start the kickstarter, raise money to cover his initial costs and then release the plans open source. yes, it will take weeks or months, and I am fully prepared to wait as long as it takes until he is ready. I enjoy reading his tweets, even if they are off topic because it lets me know he is still working on something. Also, results take testing and TIME. Something I have, and you apparently do not.

    I agree with barrylaw921, these people are a distraction.

  50. Bottom line: The cheapest UV curable resin runs about $4.50 a cubic inch (cured). There are manufactures that sell it to the general public in 1 kilo bottles for around $250 which comes out to about 24 oz. give or take. Whether Jr. makes money on the resin or not, we will still pay around the $4.50 cu.in. price. Even if it's a dollar cheaper per cu. in. it's still not cheap but still way cheaper than having a service bureau print it for you. Nobody here should expect cheaper resin, it is what it is.

About the Project


I have been dreaming about having a 3D Printer at home for many years, but the ones with good quality are not affordable and the low costs just deliver poor quality. Sounds crazy but I decided to build a high resolution 3D Printer by myself at home (people actually said that I was crazy and this was impossible). The funny thing I never saw this type of machines in real life, and still haven’t seen one besides the one I built.

Now that I succeed building the first prototype, the target is to bring this low cost 3D Printer to every home, so we are developing the first affordable one with high resolution.
